Mohamed ElBaradei

Nobel Prize "for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way".

Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei was the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for three terms, from 1997 to 2009. The IAEA is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. The IAEA is under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), as it reports to both the UN General Assembly and Security Council. During his presidency of IAEA, Dr. ElBaradei played a key role in both the diplomatic aspects and the inspection in the issue of massive destruction weapons in Iraq and in the control of nuclear weapons in Iran. In 2010 he was awarded the XIV International Prize Compostela Group-Xunta de Galicia.
