Training and development

The USC recognises in its bylaws the right of its entire staff to continuous training, with the aim of guaranteeing a constant improvement of their skills for the performance of their work.

The career development of research staff, in each of its different stages, is a priority, and for this, continuous training programmes and actions are designed, both at a transversal level for all the university's research teams, and from each of the Singular research centres and research institutes to facilitate the continuous training of their teams.

USC's training programme for its research staff includes more than 100 annual activities, both in subjects directly related to the scientific disciplines in which they carry out their research and in transversal skills, essential to develop their full potential as professionals.

More information about the training offer and activities for the development of the research career at the USC and its research centres and institutes can be found at the following links.

The USC International PhD School (EDIUS) is responsible for the management and coordination of PhD and advanced studies at USC. It supervises and facilitates the processes that lead to obtaining a PhD, offering a flexible, interdisciplinary and quality training, aimed at promoting the lines of research of greatest interest and projection of the USC. It offers 55 PhD programmes, in Arts and Humanities (11), Sciences (11), Health Sciences (15), Social and Legal Sciences and Engineering and Architecture (7).

PhD students (R1 researchers in training) will be supervised by a tutor and a thesis supervisor (positions that may or may not be undertaken by the same person) during the whole period of their PhD. USC research staff may assume these roles, even if they have a temporary contract, as long as it covers the entire time foreseen for the completion of the thesis. Thesis management is considered a key activity in the development of a research career towards leadership positions and USC promotes the participation of its researchers in this activity.

Throughout the pre-doctoral stage, USC promotes the training of researchers in subjects related to their disciplinary speciality as well as in transversal skills and abilities, such as understanding research methodologies and techniques, scientific documentation processes, scientific communication techniques and methods, and research paper writing.

USC has five special centres: CIMUS, CIQUS, CITIUS and IFGAE, accredited as SUG research centres, and CRETUS. All of them offer extensive training programmes for both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, as well as for their senior teams (R3 and R4).

  • CIMUS (Centre for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases), in addition to providing teaching staff and research directors in several Masters’ degrees and PhD programmes, every year offers about twenty seminars to delve into subjects related to their research areas, in molecular medicine and chronic diseases.
  • CIQUS (Centre for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials) also offers training for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, as well internal  conferences and seminars in both programmes for the continuing education of its researchers.
  • CITIUS (Centre for Research in Intelligent Technologies) has an extensive training programme with activities organised in different areas (research, transversal competences, PhD Meetings, EmprendeLab, technology and transfer). It also has its own conference programme; it promotes the participation of its researchers in congresses and seminars organised by third parties, and offers six inter-university master's degrees.
  • IGFAE (Galician Institute of High Energy Physics), on the other hand, has an academic training programme, mainly aimed at PhD students, an international PhD programme in Particle and Nuclear Physics, and a training plan for post-doctoral researchers, which includes topics such as mentoring, international visibility, funding or organisational responsibilities.
  • CRETUS (Interdisciplinary Centre for Research in Environmental Technologies) also has a training programme that combines offers for pre-doctoral researchers (grants, mentoring programme) with seminars and courses for its post-doctoral and senior researchers, and grants for international stays.

On the other hand, several USC research institutes carry out continuous training actions for their research teams, such as the Institute of Aquaculture, the Institute of Mathematics (IMAT), and the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE).

The USC has the Centre for Learning Technologies (CeTA) to promote educational innovation, training its teaching and research staff (PDI) in new teaching methodologies, with special attention being paid to the application of information and communication technologies (ICT). Its programme of activities includes courses for the improvement of skills and the professional development of researchers.
