This mandatory course represents the initial contact with the group of subjects that belongs to the specific technology in industrial chemistry block, and therefore, it constitutes the basis for many of the subjects that students will study in the following courses. The main objectives are:
• To know the most common operations in the chemical industry.
• To understand the principles of conservation and its practical application.
• To apply the mass and energy balances in industrial chemical processes.
* Know how to use spreadsheets for the resolution of problems of mass and energy balances.
The contents of this subject are grouped into 2 blocks:
* Block I: General
-The chemical industry and the industrial process engineer.
-Unitary operations of the chemical industry.
* Block II: Property Balances
-Systems and unit conversion.
-General expression of the macroscopic property balance.
-Balances of matter without and with chemical reaction.
-Balances of energy without and with chemical reaction.
The first block, which includes introductory topics to the Chemical Processes, Chemical Engineering and Unit Operations, aims to introduce students to a series of basic concepts and methodologies that will be deepened in the development of the program.
The second block is the fundamental part of the subject, since in many of the subjects that are included in the degree's curriculum, the resolution of the material and / or energy balances is essential. Previously, the fundamental techniques are introduced to express the values of the system variables and to propose and solve the equations that relate these variables.

General:
* CG4 - Ability to solve problems with initiative, decision making, creativity, critical reasoning and to communicate and transmit knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of Industrial Engineering in their specialty of Industrial Chemistry.
* CG5 - Knowledge for the realization of measurements, calculations, valuations, appraisals, surveys, studies, reports, work plans and other analogous works.
Basic:
* CB1 - That students have demonstrated to possess and understand knowledge in an area of study that starts from the base of general secondary education, and is usually found at a level that, although supported by advanced textbooks, also includes some aspects that imply knowledge coming from the vanguard of its field of study.
* CB2 - That students know how to apply their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional way and have the skills that are usually demonstrated through the elaboration and defense of arguments and the resolution of problems within their area of study.
* CB4 - That students can transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to a specialized and non-specialized public.
* CB5 - That students have developed those learning skills necessary to undertake further studies with a high degree of autonomy.

Specific:
* CE20 - Knowledge on material and energy balances, biotechnology, material transfer, separation operations, chemical reaction engineering, reactor design, and recovery and transformation of raw materials and energy resources.
The achievement of a basic training of the student will be through 37 hours of expository teaching, where the theoretical foundations of the subject will be explained and exercises and problems that serve to apply the theoretical knowledge will be solved. The active participation of the student will be sought, which will be encouraged to intervene continuously.
The interactive teaching, through seminars (8 hours) and practices in the computer room (4 hours) are considered as a mandatory face-to-face activity, and will focus on the approach and resolution of issues of material and energy balances, so that Computer tools will also be used to calculate and resolve balances.
During the second week of the course the obligatory performance of a group work will be indicated, in which the balance sheets of an industrial chemical system will have to be analyzed and made, in order that the student will learn to identify different unit operations and analyze the relationships between the different operation variables.
Individual tutorials will be conducted to clarify particular problems of each student and classroom tutorials with small groups (2 hours) to monitor student learning.
At the beginning of the course, students will have at their disposal on the Learning Management System (LMS) the basic theoretical contents of the subject, as well as a collection of exercises, some already solved and others proposed, for their explanation and/or completion during classes.
All teaching activities will be face-to-face, except group work.
In cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or proofs, the provisions of the “Regulations for evaluating student academic performance and reviewing qualifications” will apply.
Only students who have not participated in any of the assessment activities may receive the final grade of Not Presented.
Repeating students who voluntarily renounce the Continuous Assessment, if they have also completed and passed Group Work and Practices in one of the two previous courses, will be assessed at the second opportunity as specified in section (B2)
A)-FIRST OPPORTUNITY:
The evaluation will be carried out through Continuous Evaluation (40%) plus a Final Exam (60%).
*A1)-Continuous Assessment, the minimum qualification required will be 2.0 points, and will consist of three sections:
1º)-Group Work: compulsory and asynchronous, you can get up to 1.5 points. Competencies assessed: CB2, CT1, CT4, CT9 and CE20.
2º)-Classroom activities (seminaries): synchronous, you can get up to 2.0 points. Competencies assessed: CB1, CB4, CB5, CG4, CG5, CT2, CT10, CT12 and CE20.
3º)-Practices: compulsory and synchronous, you can get up to 0.5 points. Competencies assessed: CB1, CB4, CB5, CG4, CG5, CT2, CT10, CT12 and CE20.
Students who do not reach the minimum qualification required in the Continuous Evaluation will receive a final grade of Suspense and will be evaluated in the Second Opportunity as detailed in section (B2).
Failure to attend and/or participate in any of the mandatory activities (group work, practices and final exam) will prevent the student from passing the course.
*A2)-Final Exam, compulsory and synchronous. Competencies assessed: CG4 and CE20. Will be done in two parts with the following characteristics:
1º)-Theoretical Part: up to 1.0 points can be achieved; minimum qualification required 0.4 points.
2º)-Practical Part: you can get up to 5.0 points; the minimum qualification required 2.0 points.
It is mandatory to achieve the minimum qualification required in each of the parts to pass the subject.
B)-SECOND OPPORTUNITY:
*B1)-Students who achieved the minimum qualification required in the Continuous Assessment will retain that qualification and will take a Final Exam with the same characteristics as in the first assessment opportunity (A2).
*B2)-Students who did not reach the minimum grade required in the Continuous Assessment will lose that grade, and must take a Final Exam, synchronous in nature, which will be conducted in two parts with the following characteristics:
1º)-Theoretical Part: up to 2.0 points can be achieved; minimum qualification required 0.8 points.
2º)-Practical Part: you can get up to 8.0 points; the minimum qualification required 4.2 points.
Competencies assessed: CG4 and CE20. It is mandatory to achieve the minimum qualification required in each of the parts to pass the subject.
This subject is divided into 37 hours of expository teaching, 12 hours of interactive teaching, 2 hours of group tutorials and 4 hours of exam.
From the above, the student must employ a total of 95 hours of personal work to complete a total of 150 hours of dedication to the subject: 30 hours for the theory part, 56 hours for the applied part (group work, problems, seminars and practices), 3 hours for tutorials and 6 hours for the preparation of the final exam.
It is advisable to have user level knowledge of Excel.
It is very important to bring the matter up to date, as well as to try to carry out all the problems and exercises proposed.
The subject is taught in the two official languages of the autonomous community.
