History

The current Faculty of Labour Relations at USC is the heir of the Social School in Santiago where the Social Graduate degree was taught.

Its beginnings go back to 1942, when the Seminary of Social Studies was created in Santiago de Compostela, dependent on the Ministry of Work.

In 1946, by Ministerial Order of 28 June, the Seminary became a Social School.

In 1980, by R.D. 921/1980 of 3 May, the equivalence of the Social Graduate degree with that of the university diploma was established, although the degree was not incorporated into the official catalogue of official university degrees in Spain.

In 1986, the process began to incorporate the degree and the centre that it taught, the Social School, into the university. Thus, the R.D. 1524/1986 of 13 June determined the obligatory nature of the incorporation into the respective Spanish universities of the Social Graduate courses taught in the different Spanish Social Schools (and not their associated seminars).

The R.D. 1457/1989, of 1 December, on the transfer of functions and services of the State Administration to the Autonomous Community of Galicia in matters of Social Graduate education, determined the transfer to the Xunta de Galicia of the services, goods, rights and duties, as well as the personnel belonging to the Social School of Santiago Compostela.

Decree 241/1991 of 4 June, published in the Official Journal of Galicia on 18 July, established the integration of the Social School of Santiago into the University of Santiago de Compostela, converting the former into the University School of Social Studies and renaming the degree taught there as the Social Graduate Diploma.

In 1993, by Resolution of 15 November, the curriculum to obtain the diploma in Labour Relations at Santiago de Compostela University was approved. Since the 1993-94 academic year, the diploma in Labour Relations has been incorporated year by year, replacing the Social Graduate qualification, which would gradually disappear.

By Resolution of 9 June 1999, the new curriculum for the Diploma in Labour Relations was published, which came into force in the 1999-2000 academic year, progressively replacing the 1993 plan.

Since July 1999, in accordance with Decree 216/1999 of 15 July (the Official Galician Gazette (DOG) of 26 July), the official name of the centre is no longer the University School of Social Graduates, but rather the University School of Labour Relations.

The Governing Board of the USC, in its session of 10 November 2006, approved the official inter-university Postgraduate Course in Labour Administration and Management (a degree shared by the three Galician universities: Santiago de Compostela, Vigo and A Coruña), taught at the University of Santiago de Compostela, at the University School of Labour Relations. Its first edition was held in the 2006-2007 academic year.

In 2009, the Governing Board of the USC approved the implementation of the Degree in Labour Relations and Human Resources in the centre, which began its journey in the 2009-10 academic year, at the same time as the Diploma in Labour Relations, which it replaced, began its process of extinction.

In 2011 the process of transforming the School into a Faculty began, culminating in the promulgation of Decree 224/2011, of 24 November (published in the DOG on 12 December 2011), which modified the name of the University School of Labour Relations of the University of Santiago de Compostela, with the new name being the Faculty of Labour Relations.
