Summary
During the 1990s, some musical groups that shared very similar sociological, generic and discursive characteristics began to emerge in Galicia. The spontaneity these young people appears onto the music scene gradually converged into a self-aware cultural movement that took shape with a manifesto in 1994. From that moment on, the Bravú Movement grew into a creative identity, transcended the musical sphere and began to influence other fields such as journalism and literature with its distinct nature. At the genesis of this movement, and especially in its process of definition, dissemination and proliferation, we find Xurxo Souto, a central figure of this period, without whom it is impossible to fully understand its cultural coordinates. As a musician, radio host, journalist and writer, his career provides a lens which can show the entire history of Bravú, from the first musical texts to its expansion into the novel and the short story. His literary output, like other authors such as Santiago Jaureguizar, gives rise to transgressive texts rooted in everyday life, with a dignifying and non-romanticized perspective and themes related to rural life, the material conditions of the working class and the experiences of a Galician youth shaped by the arrival of mass culture.

Summary
Since its origins, the witch has been, and continues to be, a monster in many spheres, including cinema: the vile sexual Satanist who threatens the good Christian village, the evil cannibal witch who lives in the gingerbread house, the icy witch queen who tempts children with Turkish delight... However, feminist perspectives on the witch argue that she is considered monstrous because she reflects underlying cultural anxieties about powerful women (Koshmina, 2023, p. 105). With this in mind, Anna Biller's The Love Witch (2016) presents a challenging film that reinterprets these representations. In a 1960s and 1970s-inspired setting, the film explores femininity, power, and desire through witchcraft from an ambiguous perspective. The protagonist, the witch Elaine, is both the embodiment of male desire and the hopelessly tragic romantic. By using magic, she becomes a figure of strength and vulnerability, sparking a debate around her role within the feminist movement and cinema. The objective of this thesis is to conduct a study that clarifies the notions surrounding this film. Starting by examining the evolution of the figure of the witch throughout history and cinema, the analysis of The Love Witch will focus on the film's imagery (setting, makeup, and costumes) and their relationship to femininity, the construction of the main character, the role of magic in this work, and the contradictions surrounding female autonomy. Therefore, through this study, we can address a new interpretation of the figure of the witch and its implications for the representation of femininity in contemporary cinema. Summary
Contrastive analysis (henceforth CA) involves a systematic comparison between at least two distinct languages with the aim of delineating both their shared and distinct characteristics (Johansson 2008). In recent years, the use of electronic multilingual corpora has increased exponentially, offering a wealth of data and texts that enhance the effectiveness of such analyses, as claimed by Lüdeling and Kytö (2009). Over the years, CA has been used extensively for educational purposes, under the premise that the native tongue has an important influence on the second language (L2). In fact, the first language (L1) can actually lead learners to make common errors, such as those referred to as false friends (Gass and Selinker 2008). Building on this premise, the present final-year dissertation aims to conduct a comprehensive contrastive analysis focused on errors related to false friends. To this end, the analysis will use The Santiago University Learner of English Corpus (SULEC), which comprises written and spoken samples from learners with different mother tongues and various proficiency levels. The study will focus specifically on students with Spanish as their L1 and will look into the most recurrent mistakes in relation to false friends. The dissertation consists of two main parts: the first one, comprising chapters 2 and 3, discusses the literatura review and the methodology used for the study, while the second part presents the study conducted and the main findings (chapter 4), together with some exercises intended to address and overcome potential learning deficiencies as regards false friends. Finally, some concluding remarks are given in chapter 5.

Summary
Social networks such as TikTok, Instagram or Facebook have profoundly changed the way we live; one of these changes is reflected in the new ways people communicate. For instance, social networks have facilitated the expansion of new words and expressions, mostly from English (e.g. red flag), which were later adapted and used in other languages such as Spanish (Sanou et al., 2023). The aim of this BA Thesis is to analyse the extent to which English is being used by Spanish-speaking users in digital environments, as well as to identify differences in the use of English by speakers depending on their age and gender. On the basis of a list of 50 English terms related to social media, an online survey will be conducted via Prolific among Spanish speakers from Galicia. This survey will also be used to ascertain how familiar these speakers are with these terms, and to identify any possible influence of age, gender, and geographical differences with respect to their use. The hypothesis is that although age plays a key role, gender is not a decisive factor when using or understanding these English terms.

Summary
This paper aims to explore the themes of resilience, perseverance, and death from an ecocritical perspective in Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea and Stephen Crane's “The Open Boat”. Both works present characters confronting nature in extreme situations, where their struggles are related to human determination. In terms of ecocriticism, this analysis will present how the natural environments in both stories are not only a secondary scenery, but as characters, challenge and define the path of the plot. In The Old Man and the Sea, the protagonist's struggle against the fish reflects an interaction with nature, highlighting the theme of resilience. “The Open Boat, on the other hand, offers a unique perspective where the man is vulnerable to the uncontrollable forces of the sea. This comparative essay will try to study how each author uses nature to explore the importance and the limits of human perseverance. It will investigate, from an ecocritical perspective, the confrontation between man and nature (anthropocentrism), where the environment becomes another figure, able to confront and challenge human control over the natural world.

Summary
The objective of this dissertation is to analyse and compare two novels: O estado intermedio, by Rexina Vega, and The Gathering, by Anne Enright. Both stories revolve around how a grown-up woman deals with grief after the death of a close relative. The main characters of both works have to face and revisit their family past to unveil their unhealed wounds and find peace with themselves and with the history of their families. So, Enright and Vega portray in their novels different ways of dealing with traumatic memories and they show in their characters different traits and symptoms of childhood and family trauma. I have conducted research on the field of Trauma and Memory Studies and Literary Theory. Following this methodology, my main objective is to explore how both authors use the medium of fiction narrative to represent real-world feelings and mental processes in their novels. The structure of this dissertation will be divided in three chapters. In the first one, I will analyse O estado intermedio and focus exclusively on it. Throughout the chapter I will go through the different mental processes and trauma responses represented in the two main characters, showing why this novel is of interest for the field of Literary Studies of Memory and Trauma. The second chapter will be similar to the first, exploring The Gathering this time and analysing how the author chose to represent her characters’ traumatic events. Finally, the third and final chapter will go over the two previous ones, putting together how Vega and Enright refract human experiences in their fictional characters and worlds. Throughout the chapters, I will look into these literary works and provide my own theories on why they relate so much to the discipline of Trauma and Memory Literary Studies and how they portray different approaches to psychology. Literature can be a very powerful tool for victims to express themselves but also for theorists to study the benefits of writing and the advantages of the literary medium.

Summary
The main purpose of this Final year project is the observation and analysis of the main claims made by Castelao in his articles in the Galeuzca magazine. In this way, we will be able to construct a mental map through which we will understand the relationship between Castelao's positions on various issues and the ideas that underlie them. With the idea of providing a context, we will discuss his political work in the 1940s and the relationships he forged with representatives of other political forces (especially with the leaders of Basque and Catalan nationalism), alliances that gave rise to Galeuzca and, therefore, to the namesake journal. Finally, we will review part of his most important work, Sempre en Galiza, in order to get a closer look at the way he understood Galician national identity and the territorial model he considered most appropriate for Galiza in his final years, and thus be able to complete the ideological map he drew up through the analysis of the articles in Galeuzca.

Summary
This project examines how Galician speakers, who navigate a bilingual environment (Galician and Spanish), and who are increasingly exposed to English, develop hybrid linguistic practices combining multiple languages, e.g. Spanish and English (Spanglish), and/or Galician and English (Galinglish). These phenomena should not be criticized as cultural threats; instead, they reflect the hybrid identities of speakers. Although neither Spanglish nor Galinglish are the most precise terms preferred by linguists (cf. Casielles-Suárez 2017 on Spanglish), they can be very useful as a means to integrate English in the daily lives of Spanish and Galician speakers. This dissertation will be divided in two main sections. On the one hand, the first section will provide a theoretical introduction to code-switching, by defining the term, its types, and also the linguistic and sociocultural factors influencing its emergence. On the other hand, the second section will examine real-life examples of Galinglish and Spanglish usage, mainly extracted from different social media platforms (TikTok, Twitter, Instagram...), so as to offer an overview of how these hybrid linguistic practices manifest and evolve in the digital age. Social media, as a space of constant interaction, serve as a useful ground for the observation of code-switching phenomena, as they foster great flexibility in communication and promote, at the same time, a deeper understanding of bilingual and multilingual settings. Ultimately, this study tries to demonstrate the multifaceted nature of hybrid linguistic practices and their potential to reshape how we learn, use, and understand languages in a dynamic digital era.

Summary
This work will focus on the study of women belonging to the religious sphere within the repertoire of cantigas de escarnio of Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry. In the first part, an approach to the historical context will be made, describing the ways of life and social roles of women who took vows and entered female religious communities in the Iberian Peninsula. Additionally, attention will be given in this initial contextualization section (i) to the literary framework of genre of cantigas de escarnio, where personal satire and satire of social categories will have notable relevance, and (ii) to the Cantigas de Santa María, a work from the same literary area. The last ones although not the direct object of study, will serve as an example of a contrasting perception of monastic life reflected in the cantigas de escarnio and more aligned with medieval religious thought. In the second part, this work will focus on observing the representation of religious women in the cantigas de escarnio, paying attention to the main thematic lines developed, in which a fierce critique and mockery the ways of life of abbesses and nuns who do not follow discipline or convent norms will be evident. The series of texts that compose the corpus consists of a dozen cantigas, which will be reproduced in an appendix. To consult and explore the texts, databases from various research centers (MedDB, Littera, UniversoCantigas) will be used, as they offer the corpus of Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry and specific editions of troubadours.

Summary
“I have now attained the true art of letter-writing, which we are always told, is to express on paper exactly what one would say to the same person by word of mouth” (169). This is what the British novelist Jane Austen wrote to her sister Cassandra in their correspondence, which essentially preserves the spirit of the 18th century, widely known as the Golden Age of Letter-Writing. This BA Thesis will be devoted to the analysis of the letters that Jane Austen included in some of her most popular novels. By doing so, I intend to decipher the intricacies behind this form of writing, which plays an important role, not only in long-distance communication, but also in fiction, having become an irreplaceable way of story-telling. In order to achieve this objective, this thesis will study the formal features of some of Jane Austen’s fictional epistles such as their structure, the use of pronouns, or their vocabulary, among others. This will be the basis for the ensuing extralinguistic analysis of correspondence, which will focus on topics, such as gender or social range, essential for the description and understanding of the fictional characters that the author portrays in her works. Finally, the function of letters will be taken into consideration as they are story advancing elements which serve a wide variety of purposes.

Summary
This work focuses on the figure of Xosé Moreiras Santiso (1939 to 1996), a priest who was secularized in 1981, a writer and cultural promoter deeply involved in the development and defense of Galician identity. Through an analysis of his life and intellectual career, it examines his work as a literary author, columnist for various media outlets, and collaborator on important projects such as Alvarellos Editora and the magazine Encrucillada The study focuses on the recovery and visibility of his legacy, within the framework of a growing interest in exploring voices that, while active and committed, have not always occupied a central place in our literary studies. Through a review of his literary work, his role as a cultural promoter, and his life after leaving the priesthood and moving to Castelló, this work seeks to contribute to the appreciation of a significant figure in the formation of Galician identity during the democratic period. The purpose is to revalue the memory of those cultural agents who valuably contributed to the cultural society of the country.
