Language and format

Every doctoral thesis will contain at least the following essential sections: summary, introduction, objectives, methodology, results, conclusions, bibliography and the evaluation reports of the supervisor and tutor.

Now that you are in the writing phase, we are going to clarify some formal aspects that are taken into account in the evaluation of your research work:

As a general rule, the thesis will be written in Galician or Spanish

Exceptions:

  1. The thesis may also be written and defended in other common languages for scientific communication in your field of knowledge, as long as you have authorisation from your CAPD to do so. In these cases, you must include a summary in Galician of no fewer than 3,000 words in the thesis.

  2. If your thesis includes, besides the essential sections, others such as references, mentions, contributions or appendices, either made by you and/or by other authors, these may appear in the language in which they have been published even if it is different from Galician, Spanish or the authorised language.

  3. In theses by compendium of publications, the body of the thesis may be written in a language other than those of the publications included in it.

In any case, the language in which the thesis is written is approved with the Research Plan, and in case of wanting to modify it, the approval of a new Research Plan by the CAPD will be required.

We have a standardised format whose use is mandatory for the layout of the cover, back cover and title page of the doctoral thesis.

The format of the thesis will be in PDF A4 size (unprotected and without signatures). You will need:

The document cannot have watermarks and must contain the essential number of blank pages.

In addition, we recommend you to follow the criteria of homogeneity, typographic readability and functional ease included in the style guide for the preparation of doctoral theses carried out by the Publications and Scientific Exchange Service:

It is not necessary to submit any printed copy of the thesis to the EDIUS, however, the cover and back cover application generates a PDF for the printed version of the thesis in case you wish to print it.
