History

The University School of Social Work in Santiago de Compostela has its origins in the School of Social Workers founded in 1957 by Father Francisco Gómez Fernández.

Its legal status was held by the Galician School of Social Education until 1999. From that year onwards, it depended on the Santiago Apostle Foundation of Social Sciences, an entity declared of Galician interest and of teaching interest. The School has been attached to USC since 1983.

Like all non-subsidised private centres, it is governed by a special economic regime that is independent of the prices and fees of the University to which it is attached.

The School places special importance on the practical training of students. This is mainly done in the 4th year by means of Work Placements which are carried out intensively during the following four-month period.

In Work Placements, students are incorporated into social services institutions or centres under the responsibility of a social worker and the permanent supervision of a teacher from the School who monitors them individually, advising them on their first contact with social reality in a professional environment and following up with the final Work Placement Report.

The distribution of students in work placement centres throughout Galicia broadens the possibilities of offering them the sector or field of their preference and allows there to be a permanent link between professional and academic worlds.
