- Principles of conservation
- Mass balances without chemical reaction. Application to problems with recirculation, purge and bypass.
- Mass balances in systems with chemical reaction
- Heat energy balance. Application to chemically reactive systems.

- Solving balance problems with a spreadsheet.

Con02: Recognise the physical, chemical, mathematical and statistical bases of biological processes.
Skills:
H/D01: Appropriately apply physical, chemical, mathematical and statistical tools to the study of biological processes.
H/D03: Use the chemical and thermodynamic principles of biocatalysis and the role of enzymes in the functioning of cells and organisms.
Competences:
Comp01: Develop the ability to organise and plan work adequately, based on a synthesis and analysis that allows decisions to be made.
The theoretical foundations of the subject will be explained in the lectures (24 hours) where exercises and problems will also be solved, especially focused on bioprocess engineering, which serve to apply the theoretical knowledge.
The seminars (12 hours) are compulsory face-to-face activities to be carried out in the computer classroom; problems of mass/energy balances will be solved using spreadsheets and activities to work with a bioprocess simulator will be proposed.
In addition, the laboratory programme (12 compulsory laboratory hours) reinforces the ability to transpose theoretical knowledge into practical application. The results obtained will be collected in a scientific-technical document.
There will be compulsory tutorials with small groups (3 hours) to work on/explain specific topics that will be raised throughout the course. There will also be individual tutorials to clarify particular problems of each student.
Computer tools will be used to support teaching and problem solving (multimedia presentations, spreadsheets, and bioprocess simulators).
If possible, a visit to a bioprocess plant will be scheduled to observe in situ the application of the knowledge acquired. These field practices will be subject to the availability of funding and the possibility of carrying them out by both the company visited and the USC.
In addition, the Learning Management System (LMS) of the USC will be used as a support tool.
In cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the “Regulations for evaluating student academic performance and reviewing grades” will apply.
Continuous learning will be monitored by means of practical cases and activities to be solved, either in person or not, individually or in groups. This monitoring includes activities in the computer classroom, in the laboratory, work on the application of the contents of the subject, as well as individual tests.
The student's final grade will consider both the results of the individual tests (50%) and the activities carried out (seminars: 20%, laboratory practices: 20%; activities/work/presentation: 10%).
The description of each assessment section, the competences assessed, and the maximum/minimum marks required to pass the subject in each assessable section is distributed as follows:
- Seminars, activities in the computer classroom: will assess personal initiative, the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to the resolution of the problems posed using a spreadsheet/bioprocess simulator, as well as the results achieved and their criticism. Competences assessed: Con02 (10%), H/D01 (30%), H/D03 (20%), Comp01 (40%). Seminars in the computer room are compulsory and due to their nature cannot be repeated at the second opportunity. Marking: Maximum 2/Minimum required 0.8.
- Laboratory: laboratory work will be taken into account and a brief report of the experiments carried out will be presented. Competences assessed: Con02 (5%), H/D01 (40%), H/D03 (10%), Comp01 (45%). The laboratory classes are compulsory and due to their nature, cannot be repeated at the second opportunity. Marking: Maximum 2/Minimum required 0.8.
- Compulsory tutorials: A work done during the course will be presented. Con02 (40%), H/D01 (5%), H/D03 (5%), Comp01 (50%). Maximum grade 1/Minimum grade 0.4.
- Individual tests: these will take place throughout the course and will be theoretical-practical tests on the contents of the subject; some will be taken during seminar hours. Competences assessed: Con02 (25%), H/D01 (25%), H/D03 (25%), Comp01 (25%). Marking: Maximum 5/Minimum required 2.
The student must compulsorily complete and obtain a minimum mark of 4 (out of 10) in each of the assessable parts (Seminars, Laboratory practicals; Activities/Tutorial work and Individual tests).
If the student did not attend the compulsory classroom hours (Seminars, Laboratory practicals and Activities/Tutorial work) or did not reach the minimum required in these sections, he/she will not be able to pass the subject either at the first or second opportunity.
If the student does not achieve the minimum mark of 4 (out of 10) in the individual tests or has not been able to take any of them, he/she must do so in the first opportunity examination.
In the event of failing the subject at the first opportunity (minimum 5), the student will be assessed at the second opportunity in the individual tests section, maintaining the grades of the continuous assessment.
Only students who have not completed any of the face-to-face activities may obtain the final grade of Not Presented.
Attendance and completion of seminars, laboratory practicals, tutorials (activities/work) and individual tests are compulsory.
The student must be up to date with the subject in order to be able to understand and subsequently carry out the questions and problems posed in class.
The course is divided into 24 hours of lectures, 12 hours of seminars, 12 hours of laboratory, 3 hours of group tutoring and 4 hours for the exam. It is estimated that the student will have to spend a total of 95 hours of personal work to complete a total of 150 hours dedicated to the course.
The student must carry out all the practical exercises on their own, both those already solved in the classroom and those proposed as personal work.
It is highly recommended that the student has taken the subjects: Enzymology and Microbiology.
Proficiency in Excel or similar spreadsheets is required.
The languages of this course are Spanish and Galician.
