The Memory of Degree in Veterinary of the Veterinary Faculty of Lugo (approved on 30/06/2010 by the Conseil of Universities) shows that the title of Graduate in Veterinary Science from the USC general aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enable them professionally to ensure the health of animals and humans.
The subject of Veterinary Microbiology provides elements and tools to deep in the knowledge of the biology, pathogenic mechanisms, diagnosis and control of the main microorganisms involved in diseases affecting farm animals and pets, plus other aspects in relation to public health.
The specific objectives of the subject are:
-Objective 1. To understand the basic concepts and scientific terminology used in microbiology.
-Objective 2. To know the structure, physiology, pathogenesis, genetics and taxonomy of microorganisms of clinical significance in veterinary and public health.
-Objective 3. To know the possible interactions between the organism and the host.
-Objective 4. To learn the basic techniques and methods of microbiological diagnosis.
-Goal 5. To know the methods of control of microorganisms.
The subject of Veterinary Microbiology is divided into a theoretical part and a practical part.
The theoretical program of the subject is divided into two parts:
PART 1 is devoted to GENERAL MICROBIOLOGY. Unit 1 serves as an introduction and addresses the historical development of Microbiology and analyzes microbial diversity. In topics 2 to 6 (GENERAL BACTERIOLOGY, GENERAL MYCOLOGY AND GENERAL VIROLOGY) the general characteristics of the three main groups of veterinary interest are described: Bacteria, fungi and viruses. Units 7 and 8 are dedicated, respectively, to the study of the pathogenic capacity of these three groups of microorganisms on animals and their control by means of physical and chemical methods, paying special attention to antimicrobials. Finally, in topic 9 the microbial systematics and the concepts of classification, identification and nomenclature are analyzed.
PART 2 is dedicated to SPECIAL MICROBIOLOGY, which in turn includes three sections:
SPECIAL BACTERIOLOGY (items 10 to 16).
SPECIAL MYCOLOGY (item 17).
SPECIAL VIROLOGY (items 18 to 23).
In each topic, the main bacteria, fungi and viruses of veterinary interest are studied.
Units 24 and 25 have as objective, to know the effect of microorganisms on the environment that surrounds them (MICROBIAL ECOLOGY) as well as its importance in the field of INDUSTRIAL MICROBIOLOGY.

-Paper of the microorganisms in the production of the foods: Microorganisms of interest in the alimentary industry. Controls of hygienic quality of the foods. Systems of detection and control of critical points in the industry.
-Industrial production of chemical substances by fermentation. Production of antibiotics. Applications biotecnológicas in the pharmaceutical industry, of immunological compounds and of proteins with therapeutic ends. Cloning, recombination and expression of genes in microorganisms procariotas and eukaryotic.
B. PRACTICAL PROGRAM (20 hours)
The practical program will tackle along 20 hours distributed in 5 sessions along a week (of Monday to Friday, at a rate of 4 daily hours).

The teaching of the subject will be carried out through different types of classes:
-Expositive classes: 54 hours.
-Tutorials: 1 hour (Presentation).
-Laboratory practices: 20 hours.
- The contents of the Theoretical Program will be taught in 54 expository classes using power point presentations of approximately 50 minutes duration. The indicative didactic material exposed in the classes will be made available to the students through the Virtual Classroom of the subject.
- The contents of the practical classes will be taught in the LABORATORY ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF PAVILION 1 OF THE VETERINARY SCHOOL (GROUPS Lb G1 to Lb G6). The hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Attendance at practical sessions is mandatory. Practice manuals will be provided to monitor the contents.
-Finally, each individual student will be able to contact the two professors responsible for teaching the subject to ask them any question they consider relevant and may influence their training. Teachers will be available during their tutoring hours.
A. WRITTEN EVALUATION (EXAM).
The score corresponding to the written evaluation will mean 80% of the final grade. (8 POINTS).
The exam will take place on the date and time agreed by the Faculty Board, in the classrooms reserved for that purpose. It may include multiple choice questions, true/false, short or development questions, all of them from the theoretical program.
To pass the exam it is necessary to achieve a minimum score of 5 out of 10 points (4 out of 8 points) IN EACH OF THE TWO PARTS INTO WHICH THE SUBJECT IS DIVIDED. In the case of not exceeding this score or of not taking the exam, the student will have to take the second opportunity to pass the subject.
B. CONTINUOUS EVALUATION
The score corresponding to the Continuous Assessment will mean 20% of the final grade. (2 POINTS) It will be assigned as follows:
B1. Optional periodic tests:
The score obtained in this section will represent 10% of the final grade (1 POINT).
There will be continuous monitoring throughout the semester of the acquisition of knowledge by carrying out 4-6 voluntary tests; in them a number of between 40-60 true/false questions will be raised.
B2. Assistance, realization and examination of laboratory practices:
Attendanc and completion of laboratory practices is mandatory to pass the subject.
The score obtained in this section will represent up to 10% of the final grade. (1 POINT).
SUMMARY OF THE CONDITIONS THAT MUST BE MET TO PASS THE COURSE:
1st. It is necessary to achieve a minimum of 5 points out of 10 (4 out of 8 points) in the two parts into which the exam will be divided.
To this qualification the qualification of the continuous evaluation will be added to establish the final qualification. The note to pass the subject will be greater than or equal to 5 in all cases.
2nd. The note obtained in the continuous evaluation will be valid for both opportunities of the academic year.
3rd. Students who do not pass the subject on either of the two occasions, will be able to keep the qualification obtained in the continuous assessment during the two academic years immediately following the current one, 2024-2025 and 2025-2026, so they will only have to take the test of written assessment (exam).
Students who duly justify that during the semester they will not be able to attend theoretical classes will be exempted from doing so and their evaluation will be carried out as follows:
1. Written exam, will account for 90% of the final grade. (9 POINTS).
2. Continuous assessment: Attendance and completion of laboratory practices. 10% of the grade (1 POINT).
VERY IMPORTANT:
"For cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the "Regulations for evaluating the academic performance of students and reviewing grades" will apply.

It is very important that the student has a good base of the subjects studied in the first year of the Degree, Biochemistry, Genetics and Immunology, for which a review of the concepts studied in them is recommended.
It is recommended that prior to attending the theoretical and practical classes, students carry out a comprehensive reading of the teaching material available in the virtual classroom. It is recommended that the student completes said guidance teaching material with the appropriate annotations taken in class and with the reviewed bibliography.
