Provide the student with the vision necessary to analyze events and processes related to the fires that take place on the territory, to evaluate and analyze each event in their geographical location.
Application of new technologies for spatial information (remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems) to the production and analysis of information relating to forest fires for the environmental assessment and management at various scales, both local and regional and global.
The memory contents of the title provides for the following contents:
Fundamentals ofremote sensing
Corrections and treatments of the digital image
Extraction and analysis of information
Detection and tracking of fire
Follow-up to the regeneration of large burned areas
Follow-up to the moisture content of live vegetation
Application of Geographic Information Systems for management in the restoration of large burned areas
Obtaining of thematic layers for use in fire simulators
These contents will be developed in accordance with the following frame:

Students will work the following specific competences:
EC39 – Know the basic theoretical foundations of the process of remote sensing and processing techniques, analysis and interpretation of satellite images.
EC40 – Capability to carry out mapping, obtaining information from satellite images in those aspects related to forest fires.
EC41 – Knowledge of thematic layers necessary for the management in the restoration of burned areas and fire simulators.
Students will gain the knowledge and skills through the following activities:
– Master classes (8 hours) that will give fundamentally by means of oral presentation with power point. (Competence CE39).
– Students will attend 9 hours of practices in computer classrooms. They will apply the taught methodologies and technical seen in the theory through case studies. The students will have to make a likewise a report from the individual practies (Competitions worked, CE40 and CE41).
- The group work and its defense must be done in English (1 hora).
– Students will join a visit (3 hours) to the Instituto de Estudos do Territorio (IET, Institute of Territory Studies) (Competence CE40)
– Group tutoring session (2 hours) in which it will treat to resolve the doubts posed in the subject.
For the continuous evaluation of the students:
– The IET visit and the corresponding report will be made once the 50 % of the contents are taught.
– The delivery of the practices report will be made when finalising the subject.
Students will take a final exam in the official date. The Practices are also compulsory, as well as the delivery of a final memory of practices. In the absence of delivery of that repot, the studen would not pass the subject. The practices approved will be saved for next exams.
It will be necessary to reach a minimum note of 4 points from a total of 10 in the final exam, as well as in the continuous evaluation of the practices. Students will pass the subject starting a global qualification of 5 points from a total of 10.
Exam: CE39 (40%)
Continuous Evaluation of the practices: CE40, CE41 (50%)
Visit to the IET and its evaluation: CE40 (10%)
Group work presentation: CE39 (10%)
The described assessment system will be used in the first opportunity exam, as well as in the extraordinary opportunity.
The students that have conceded dispenses of assistance to any of the educational activities programmed according to the had in the Instruction 1/2017 of the General Office, will be able to study the subject through the learning resources facilitated by the professor in the virtual campus, together with the support of the basic bibliography. They will have to make the practices with their personal effort and deliver the final report. The visit to the IET will be substituted by a report in which they explain the made works the field of the geomatcis by that organization.
The matter consists of 3 credits, it supposes a dead-weight capacity for the pupil of 75 hours.
Face-to-face work in the classroom (27 hours):
Masterclasses for a group of 40 students: 9 h
Interactive teaching in group of 20 students: 12 h
Collective tutoring sessions in a group of 10 students: 3 h
Group work presentation: 1 h
Evaluation activities: 2 h
Personal work of the students (48 hours):
Reading and preparation of theoretical lessons: 12 h
Realization of exercises: 10 h
Previous Preparation of the practices and reports: 12 h
Preparation of works of course: 8 h
Preparation for the exam: 6 h
Participation in class of active form posing doubts and interests. It is very recommended to publish the doubts in the Forum of the subject in the virtual campus. By this way, students not only will be able to obtain an answer of any mate, but besides it contributes to know the solutions to difficulties that can arise during the course.
For cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the "Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión das cualificacións" "(artigo 16 da Resolución de 15/6/2011 da USC, DOG de 21/7/2011)" will apply.
