Subject objectives
Theoretical contents:
1 To present the basic terminology used in the subject and in the area of Animal Production of ruminants.
2. To transmit to the student the coordination and application of the physiological knowledge and animal needs and, furthermore, the installations, environmental conditions and the more adequate handling so that the rearing and exploitation of ruminant animals useful for men make possible the viability, return and growth of the stockbreeding enterprise.
Skills:
3. To offer informative infrastructure enough so that the veterinarian-to-be can answer the present demands of the stockbreeders, being directed towards the quality improvement of the obtained cattle products.
Attitudes:
4. To give students an integrating concept of all the different subjects of Animal Production, to promote the formation of a mentality in which the knowledge of rural environment and its protection should guide his/her professional conduct.
5. To develop a critical and non-dogmatic attitude in the capacity of diagnosis and proposal of solutions before concrete situations of stockbreeding farms and advise to their owners.

The use of both basic and complementary internet resources specified is recommended, in the Bibliography section, as well as that electronic access bibliography available at the USC Library. A BUSC EN LIÑA https://busconline.gal. Also, through portico (http://sfx.bugalicia.org/san/az) and EZproxy (https: // ezbusc), managed by BUGalicia, it will be possible to search for scientific journals and electronic books (with the credentials of the USC). For specific topics, professors may provide open access articles or recommend searching through PubMed or Google Schoolar.
Competencies
At the end of the academic year students should:
- be able to identify the animal needs in the different productive systems and installations, environmental conditions and the most appropriate management for the breeding and exploitation of productive ruminants in optimal conditions, both from the animal point of view and the point of view of viability, return and growth of the farming enterprise.
- have the capacity of diagnosis and proposal of solutions before concrete situations of farms and advise to the owners of the farms towards an improvement in management and an increase in cattle products quality.
- be used to the acquisition and critical use of bibliographic resources (books, technical journals, databank, Internet websites, etc.).

Teaching methodology
*Therical program:
24 sessions of 50 minutes of each one throughout the first semester according to schedules approved by the Faculty Board for each academic course. The last 10 minutes of each session can be dedicated to synthesize the treated subject, to fix the concepts exposed and to solve the possible doubts that have been able to provoke, ace as to verify of way succinct with random oral questions, the degree of compression on the part of the students of the explained subject.
External professionals could be invited to give talks.
*Practical program (3 active visits):
o Active farm visit 1: (V1)Visit operation of milk bovine and Centre of recria of novillas: Recognition and use of the material and cattle tools; determine the proportions planimetry and of the operation; productive indices; study of seasonal breeding.
o Active farm visit 2: (V2) Visit operation of bovine of meat: Recognition and use of the material and cattle tools; determine the proportions planimetry and of the operation; productive indices; study of seasonal breeding.
o Active farm visit 3: (V3) Visit operation of goat ovine/: Recognition and use of the material and cattle tools; determine the proportions planimetry and of the operation; productive indices; quantitative and qualitative determination of the lactation curve; study of p seasonal breeding;
In each visited operation, the student will be able to observe the productive process of each species: the constructive characteristics and determine the proportions of the facilities; the environmental average control; the hygiene, cleaning and biosecurity of the facilities; the general handling of the animals carried out by the workers of the operation, including the handling of the feeding; the sanitary programs and of prophylaxis, etc. In all the operations, given the measures of biosecurity of same and in fulfillment of the norms of effective well-being the animal, the visits will become under a strict control and without disturbing the habitat of the animal, trying to cause the smaller possible incidence on the animal and its surroundings. In each visit the students will have to complete a script previously elaborated by the professors responsible for the subject, in which he will analyze the most excellent characteristics of the visited operation, determining the productive parameters of the same one. These practical works allow to the student a direct bonding with the operation and the observation of the real situation of the same one, analyzing their problematic one and initiating to them in one of the possible professional exits of the degree as it is the technical and economic advising of the cattle operations. Also, the elaboration of these works will develop in the student the technique of critical thought and will foment the work and the dynamics of groups. Active visits are mandatory. When finalising each visit practises will be evaluated independently to the alumnado (16 hours).
*Practical laboratory/computer classroom: 3 practical AG,BG and CG: Search and treatment of technical information of pages of interest WWW. related to the subject. Economic technical analysis of cattle, sheep and goat farms in their double productive aptitude. The student will be taught to calculate and interpret the productive/economic parameters of the different species studied. (10 hours)
Tutorials:
One hours are devoted to individual tutorials.
All the teaching will carry out with support of the TIC and with systematic employment of the Virtual Campus like support of the teaching.
Evaluation system
The students’ final assessment is based on a written exam written including both the issues explained during the theoretical and practical sessions. Type of exam "miscellaneous multiple choice and short answer" for theory and exercises for practice. Besides, it will be compulsory to present the handed pieces of work perfomed in the practical sessions., as a way to prepare this part for the final written exam. It is vital to obtain a punctuation equal or higher to 5 on 10: to pass the subject. Will have to approve so much the part given in the theoretical sessions (50%) like the one of practices (50%), individually.
-The note of the final examination will suppose 60 % of the final qualification of the matter.
-The tasks and proofs related with the practical sessions (continuous evaluation) will suppose 40% of the final note (20% practical Visits, 20% practise laboratory/classroom). The continuous evaluations will be carried out preferably within the schedule stipulated for each practice.
Regular assistance to the sessions expositivas and compulsory to the practical activities programmed (20%). To be able to realise the examination is necessary to assist to 100% of the practical sessions including the work entrusted in the same.
The qualifications of practices and theoretical will have validity for the corresponding academic course. They do not save parts approved the examination for the extraordinary announcement. Repeating students may be exempted from active visits, in the event that they have passed them, for the following course.
The compulsory and inexcusable teaching activities for students who have exemption from attendance according to instruction 1/2017 of the General Secretariat, may be replaced by assignments entrusted to students, which will have a similar weighting to that of the practice they replace.
For cases of fraudulent completion of exercises or tests, the provisions of the "Regulations for evaluating the academic performance of students and reviewing grades" (article 16 of the Resolution of 06/15/2011 of the USC, DOG of 07/21/2011).

Subject study recommendations
- Attending regularly to classes.
- Trying to understand and to reason the structure and functioning of a livestock farm and not only to memorize some data to be able to repeat them in an exam.
- Making a good use of tutorials with regularity and without waiting for the last week before the exam.
- Having the aptitude for gathering and absorbing all the information that they will receive in their visits to farms, so that it is required a great capacity to watch and big doses of curiosity.
-Carry out the internship assignments assigned throughout the course, without leaving them for the end.
